AGCOM 100: Introduction to Agricultural Communications
Introduction to agricultural communications programs, activities, careers, and trends. This course covers audience analysis across media platforms, Associated Press writing style, and understanding target audiences.
AGCOM 400: Agricultural Business Communications
Written communications as used in agricultural industries. A writing course emphasizing the tools and techniques of writing memos, letters, short and long reports, proposals, and presentations.
AGCOM 425: Undergraduate Research in Agricultural Communications
This course uses qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods to conduct an agricultural and environmental communications research project. A faculty coordinator will assist students through the stages of conducting a research project and reporting its outcomes.
AGCOM 435: Video in Agriculture and Food
Theory of visual storytelling is combined with basic and intermediate video camera and non-linear editing instruction to produce TV documentaries, magazine-type stories, and personal videos for web and broadcast distribution.
AGCOM 550: Internship in Agricultural Communications
The intern works in a professional capacity in areas such as print journalism, electronic media, advertising, photography, and public relations. Student is supervised by a professional and a faculty member. One hour of credit for each four weeks of supervised work. Internship report and presentation required.
AGCOM 610: Crisis Communication
Focus is placed on the application of effective crisis communication practices and techniques. Students learn relevant interpersonal and organizational communication theory, assess/evaluate organizational risks, and develop a crisis communication plan. Students partner with a community business to create and deliver a comprehensive crisis plan.
AGCOM 635: Advanced Multimedia Production in Agriculture and food
Provides an understanding and application of advanced digital media production techniques. This is a “practicum-based” course focused on creating multimedia products for educational purposes. Students create short-format, multi-media pieces on both agricultural research and activities conducted at Kansas State University and the Kansas agriculture industry.
AGCOM 844: Theory in Agricultural Communications
The study of major communication theories and theorists in the context of agricultural communications.
Past Courses Which I Have Taught or TA’ed
AEC 4036/5037: Advanced Media Production
This course provides an overview of advanced digital media production techniques. In this course, students create professional-quality videos for educational purposes. Students are taught how to communicate science through video, and they produce videos for the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, and the National Science Foundation.
AEC 3070: Digital Media Production in Agricultural & Life Sciences
This course is offered to students of all levels in the Department of Agriculture Education and Communication. In this class, students are introduced to video shooting and editing, digital photography, print design, and Web design through hands-on experiences.
AEC 4036: Advanced Agricultural Communication Production
This course is offered to students in the Department of Agriculture Education and Communication that have complete coursework in AEC 3070. This course provides an overview of advanced digital media production techniques.
ALS 4936: CALS Leadership Institute
This course is offered to Sophomores and Juniors in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at UF.. This class provides and introduction to leadership studies and personal leadership development.
AEC 3033: Business & Research Writing
This course is offered to Juniors and Seniors at UF and is mandatory for all majors to complete in the College of Agricultural and Life Science. This class also counts for 6,000 words toward the Gordon Rule requirement in the state of Florida.
